Judo

Judo (literally, the “Gentle Way”) is a modern martial art characterized by throws, pinning techniques, arm locks, and chokes.  Founded in 1882 in Japan by Dr. Jigoro Kano, judo is based on the much older Japanese unarmed combat system known as jiu-jitsu.  Dr. Kano synthesized underlying principles from several different styles of jiu-jitsu into a complete system that encourages the physical, mental, and moral development of its practitioners.  Judo has been recognized as an international Olympic sport since 1964, with more nations fielding an Olympic team in judo than any other sport other than soccer.
